Steel Your Art Away

Janet grew up on a farm near Souris, Manitoba, with an ongoing curiosity  of nature's plants and critters.

Metal art became a passion for her after deciding to learn how to make metal focal points for her garden.  While living in Regina, she took evening classes at SIAST Technical College.

Later, after a move back to Manitoba, she enrolled in metal fabrication class at the Winnipeg Industrial Skills Training Center.

One of her favorite pieces was an early creation she calls The Helix.  She had found many off-cuts in the scrap bin at school and asked the instructor if she could create something with them.  She had no master plan to begin with, but she had a concept and it came together nicely - three Gothic spirals with a place in the center for a light or candle that would cast an amazing shadow.

Steel Your Art Away Studio is now home to a second artist – Miles Watts.  Miles and Jan got together some years ago and with the help of a 3 minute welding lesson from Jan, he was off and running.  Miles is a carpenter by trade and uses his spatial relations gifts to create some wonderful pieces.
